Lachhuman Sunar, 22 of Dailekh District, who had been held at Surkhet Jail, died on the evening of May 6, 2026.
Acting Administrator of District Jail Surkhet, Bhuwan Gautam, said that Sunar had fallen unconscious inside the jail at 6:40 pm. The administrator rushed him to Karnali Province Hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead. The body has been kept at the provincial hospital in Surkhet. Family members have demanded an investigation to uncover the truth behind the incident.
Sunar had been arrested in connection with a killing case that occurred on the border of Jajarkot District and Dailekh District. An order issued by the bench of the Jajarkot District Court on November 23, 2025, had directed that he be kept in custody for trial proceedings. While he had initially been held at Jajarkot Prison, he was transferred to Surkhet Jail on December 30, 2025, as part of a plan to construct a new jail building.
