NHRC Urges Action on Rekcha Water Issue

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Karnali Province Office, has expressed concern over the long-standing drinking water problem in Rekcha, Chokune Rural Municipality–5, Surkhet, and urged the relevant authorities to take immediate action to resolve it.

In a letter sent on April 8, the Karnali Province Office of the Commission stated that it conducted an on-site monitoring regarding the issue of local residents facing a prolonged lack of basic drinking water in Rekcha. According to the letter, the Commission, together with the Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC), conducted a joint monitoring on March 13, during which discussions were held with local residents, elected representatives, and concerned stakeholders.

Based on monitoring data, the Commission noted that the drinking water problem in the area remains serious. The letter, signed by Ramesh Kumar Thapa, Chief of the Karnali Province Office, also highlighted that although some efforts have been made by the local authorities, the problem has not been resolved in the long term.

The Commission has urged Chokune Rural Municipality, local representatives, and the relevant government agencies to accelerate necessary actions to achieve a sustainable solution to the drinking water problem. It also recommended ensuring timely access to safe drinking water, which is a basic human right.

Additionally, the Commission emphasized making services provided through the ward office for senior citizens, pregnant women, and postpartum mothers more accessible and effective. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Ministry of Water Resources and Energy Development, Karnali Province, District Coordination Committee Surkhet, Chokune Rural Municipality, Ward No. 5 Office, and the Kaduri Organization for their information.
