President Ram Chandra Paudel has expressed hope for everyone’s cooperation in making the upcoming House of Representatives election on March 5, 2026, human rights friendly and in strengthening the democratic system. He stated, “Following the youth movement, the political situation that has developed in the country is being closely observed by the entire Nepali population as well as the international community. To guide the country’s current situation towards normalisation, a coordinated and positive role of the government, political parties, civil society, youth activists, and the general public is necessary.” On the occasion of the 77th International Human Rights Day, on December 10, he extended his greetings and noted that, in a context where nations worldwide are focusing on building a just and equitable society, Nepal must also take further initiative to fully implement the fundamental rights of citizens as provided in the Constitution.
The message stated, “Human rights are the foundation of life that allows humans to live as humans, which is why International Human Rights Day is celebrated with great importance worldwide. Since human rights are inherent, the subjects mentioned in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are adopted by Nepal’s Constitution, contributing to the strengthening of freedom, equality, and justice.” Noting that Nepal is also a party to various international human rights treaties, President Paudel emphasised that the country has always remained committed and sensitive to the obligations of respecting, protecting, promoting, and fulfilling human rights. He expressed confidence that the observance of Human Rights Day will gain further significance if the active involvement of the federal government, provincial governments, local bodies, social organisations, institutions, media, and the private sector can further ensure the rights, freedoms, and justice for vulnerable and at-risk groups.
President Paudel also stated that economic, social and cultural rights are an important aspect of human rights that underpin individual freedom and the democratic governance system.
