The 34th International Day of Persons with Disabilities is being observed today with various programmes. On the occasion of this day, the government, concerned bodies, and various organisations active in this sector have organised different events. Since 1992, this Day has been observed every year on December 3 around the world following the initiative of the United Nations to promote the rights of persons with disabilities. This year, the theme of the Day has been set as “Promoting a Disability-Inclusive Society: Advancing Social Progress.”
Observed every year on December 3 worldwide, this day serves as a reminder of the collective commitment to ensure the rights, equality, inclusion, and dignity of persons with disabilities. It remains essential to develop disability-friendly physical infrastructure and create an enabling environment in offices, schools, public transportation, roads, parks, temples, government, public, and private structures as per their needs, and to make necessary facilities available.
Although Nepal’s Constitution guarantees that citizens with disabilities have the right to live a dignified life with recognition of diversity, and ensures equal access to public services and facilities, demands have continued for its full and effective implementation in practice.
