During the protests held across the country on 8th and 9th September under the call of the Gen-Z generation, 1,280 inmates escaped from Nakkhu Jail, Lalitpur, due to vandalism, attacks, and arson. Among the escaped inmates, 587 have voluntarily returned to the jail so far, while some have been reinstated in various other jails across the country.
Still, 651 escaped inmates have not returned despite appeals from the Nakkhu Jail administration. The Jail Management Department has given all escaped inmates a deadline of Monday, 20th Ashoj, to return voluntarily. The department stated that legal action will be taken under the Prison Act, 2079, if they fail to return within the given time.
The department has requested the families of inmates, local governments, security agencies, media, and other concerned stakeholders to cooperate in locating and returning the escaped inmates. The department also stated that the escaped inmates can surrender by contacting the nearest police office, jail, or relevant authority within the prescribed deadline.
