A complaint has been filed by the family of Ranjita Kumari Mandal, 22, of Samshi Rural Municipality-1, Parsa at the District Police Office, Mahottari, on May 20, accusing her husband, Ramesh Mandal, 24, father-in-law Bijay Mandal, 50, sister-in-law Roshan Mandal, 20, and Sushmita Mandal, 19, of killing her over dowry-related abuse. The police arrested the husband on the same day of the complaint.
According to the complainant, they were informed on the morning of May 19 that Ranjita died by alleged suicide by hanging. However, the family claims that bruises were found on her body along with visible bleeding, leading them to suspect foul play and accuse the in-laws of the killing. It is further stated that after she was allegedly found hanging, her husband immediately took her to Janaki Academic Hospital in Ramgopalpur Municipality, where doctors declared her dead.
The deceased’s mother, Kaushilya Devi Mandal of Haripurwa Municipality-7, Basantpur, Sarlahi, stated that she had provided Rs. 1 million in cash along with gold ornaments and other goods during the marriage of Ramesh and Ranjita on March 8, 2026. She further alleged that within two months of marriage, her daughter was subjected to continuous mental and physical abuse over demands for a buffalo from her maternal home, which eventually led to her death.
Police confirmed that the husband has been arrested immediately, and that further investigation will proceed based on the post-mortem report. The body has been kept for post-mortem at the Provincial Hospital in Jaleshwar.
