Complaint Filed with NHRC Over Beaing on Majid Ansari

The Gen Z Movement Alliance has filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding the alleged beating and detention of Gen Z activist Majid Ansari by police.

According to Shyam Babu Kafle, Under Secretary and Assistant Spokesperson of the NHRC, the Commission received the complaint via email on July 13, naming the Government of Nepal, the Home Administration, and the Nepal Police as respondents.

The Alliance has also lodged a complaint against the police personnel allegedly involved in assaulting Ansari at the holding centre in Kirtipur, as well as against Ojaswi Thapa, who is alleged to have identified himself as a representative sent through coordination between the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Home Affairs. The complaint alleges that Thapa instructed and mobilized the police during the incident.

The complaint further states that the incident violated Articles 16, 17, 20, and 22 of the Constitution, alleging infringement of fundamental rights, including the right to live with dignity, freedom of opinion and expression, and the freedom to assemble peacefully without arms. It claims that Ansari was assaulted and detained in violation of these constitutional guarantees.

The Alliance has submitted video footage of the incident, a medical report from Kirtipur Hospital, and a medical report from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital to the Commission as supporting evidence. The complaint states that Ansari is currently undergoing treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj.
