Cement Industry Workers Protest Demanding Social Security and Salary Increase

More than 275 employees of CG Samrat Cement Industry in Lamahi Municipality–7, Dang, have launched an indefinite protest after locking the industry’s main gate, alleging discrimination in salary increases and failure to enroll them in the Social Security Fund.

According to Govinda Devkota, coordinator of the struggle committee and an industry administration employee, the workers began the protest after accusing the company of increasing the salaries of only higher-level employees and not enrolling workers in the Social Security Fund. The employees submitted a memorandum containing seven demands to Annapurna Mishra, head of the industry’s employee administration, on July 3, while announcing the protest.

According to the struggle committee, the employees’ protest has brought all operations at the cement industry, including production and distribution, to a halt.

In their memorandum, the employees demanded that salary increases be provided to all workers without discrimination, promotions be based on performance evaluations, existing benefits not be reduced, all employees be mandatorily enrolled in the Social Security Fund, contributions to the Social Security Fund be calculated based on 60 percent of their salary as the basic salary, discrimination in food and accommodation be ended, priority in employment be given to local residents, and vacant positions be filled through the promotion of subordinate employees.

The employees said they would continue the protest until their demands are addressed. Meanwhile, Annapurna Mishra, head of the industry’s employee administration, said discussions regarding the employees’ demands are ongoing.
