After the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari has dissolved the parliament and set a date for mid-term elections.
After the cabinet meeting held in the morning of December 20, Prime Minister Oli proposed to dissolve the parliament and the date of the election was fixed by the President’s Office. President Bhandari has announced the dissolution of the parliament in accordance with Article 76, Sub-article 1 and 7 of the Constitution and Article 85 and the basic essence and values of the parliamentary system.
She has also fixed mid-term elections for the House of Representatives in the first phase on April 30, 2021 and in the second phase on May 6, 2021.
According to media reports, a no-confidence motion was filed against the Prime Minister at the Parliament Secretariat on December 20. According to reports, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers in the morning of December 20 and proposed to go for mid-term elections.
Seven ministers have resigned in protest of the dissolution of parliament. Minister for Education Giriraj Mani Pokharel, Minister for Energy Barshaman Pun, Minister for Agriculture Ghanshyam Bhusal, Minister for Tourism Yogesh Bhattarai, Minister for Forests Shakti Basnet, Minister for Labor Rameshwar Raya Yadav and Minister for Drinking Water Bina Magar have resigned together.
