Inmates and detainees in crisis due to the overcrowd

The District prison of Baglung is facing crisis after the overcrowded inmates and detainees. The district prison with “C” grade has a capacity to accommodate only 25 inmates and detainees however it is overcrowded four times more. At present, the district prison has 10 female and 78 male inmates and detainees which has only capacity to accommodate 18 male and 7 female inmates according to prison chief Deepak Sharma.

Because of the overcrowded inmates and detainees, they are facing difficulties on sleeping, going to toilet, drinking water and many other basic issues. Some of the inmates are compelled to sleep in the kitchen according to chief Sharma. Most of the inmates and detainees are sleeping in a rotation basis. There has been voices raised to convert the district prison into zonal prison however there is no alternatives within the zone.

Inmates and detainees are at risk of transmittable diseases.  Most of them are suffering from skin diseases according to health assistant Ashish Sapkota. The health budget of the prison is also allocated for only 25 inmates and detainees resulting the deprivation of treatment to others. There has been severe shortage of clean drinking water inside the prison and inmates are having heath issues due to the contaminated water.
