During the Gen-Z movement, on September 9, 2025, 328 inmates escaped from the Kailali District Jail and have still not been traced.
Although a notice was issued asking the escaped inmates to return voluntarily by October 6, 2025, only 339 inmates, including 36 women, had returned by that date. The remaining 328 inmates have not come into contact, according to Ramkumar Chaudhary, Acting Jailor of Kailali District Jail.
He stated, “A deadline of October 6 was set for the escaped inmates to return. Those who do not return within the stipulated time will face further action as per the Prison Act 2079. Inmates hiding from authorities will be brought back by the police using force if necessary. If family members are found protecting them, they will also be prosecuted under the prevailing law.”
Kailali District Jail housed 667 inmates, including 58 women. On 24 Bhadra, during the Gen-Z movement, all inmates had escaped from the jail.
Acting Jailor Chaudhary noted that since 328 inmates, including 22 women, are still at large, it poses security challenges, and the police are continuing their search efforts.
