Five individuals have been arrested on charges of inhumane treatment for allegedly tying a 21-year-old woman to an electric pole and smearing her with soot.
According to Assistant Sub-Inspector Nambukumar Majhi of the Area Police Office, Anarmani, the incident took place on June 12 at Charepane Chowk in Birtamod Municipality–2, where a 21-year-old woman was tied to an electric pole and smeared with soot, and five individuals were arrested for investigation.
The police said that due to personal enmity, five individuals, including Samir Murmu, 18, of Kankai Municipality-8, Sabina Murmu, 20, Swastika Murmu, 25, Pooja Basnet, 19, of the same area, and Manju Hasda, 44, of Birtamod Municipality-2, were arrested on June 12 for investigation on charges of inhumane treatment.
The police further stated that 16 pamphlets containing defamatory content about the victim’s character were also found with the accused, and they were arrested for investigation.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Majhi said that locals informed the Area Police Office, Anarmani, after news spread that the young woman had been smeared with soot by a group of five people, leading to their arrest.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that one woman among the group accused the victim of having an illicit relationship with her husband, which led the group to commit the inhumane act.
The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Birta City Hospital in Birtamod.
