We strongly condemn the excessive use of force by the police during the protest organized by Gen-Z on September 8, 2025 in Kathmandu against corruption, mismanagement, and the government’s decision to shut down social media. In the course of the protest, which had been pre-announced and began with a gathering at Maitighar before moving towards Baneshwor, the police used excessive force, resulting in the deaths of 14 people and injuries to hundreds, including journalists covering the event. The casualties caused by the use of extreme force, without resorting to the many available peaceful methods of crowd control, have mocked human rights, democratic values, and principles. We urge that the Government of Nepal conduct a judicial investigation into the incident and bring those responsible under the purview of justice, ensure free and immediate treatment of the injured. We urge the Government to bring the agitated youth to consensus in order to restore peace and social harmony.
