Press Statement

Provide Justice to Ganga Maya to Protect her Life

Tomorrow, September 23 marks completion of one year following death of Nanda Prasad Adhikari, 56, of Phule-7, Gorkha. Adhikari had passed away 3 hundred 33 days later while holding fast-unto-death demanding action against murderers of his son on September 22 last year. His body  is kept at the TU Teaching Hospital since past one year. We remind the government that it is the right of the victim to conduct last rites according to religious tradition. We have been reiterating that the state’s indifference towards victim’s right to justice led to Nanda Prasad’s death.

Ganga Maya Adhikari, who had accompanied her husband Nanda Prasad in the fast-unto-death called off her strike on November 8, 2014 in the presence of representatives of National Human Rights Commission and rights activists following the government’s commitment to address her demands. She has resumed her hunger strike from September 9, 2015 after the government failed to act on its commitment to take action against murderers of her son within this one year.

We urge Government of Nepal to provide justice to Ganga Maya and take adequate steps to protect her life.
