Press Statement

We have been aggrieved by the death of four persons including two children when police opened fire following the clash between protestors of Madhesi Morcha and police at a market in Behtari chok along the Bhairahawa-Lumbini road section on September 15. Expressing our heartfelt tribute to the deceased, we wish for speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.

Bindu Lakaul, around 40, of Bethari in Gonaha VDC-6, Raj Kumar Barai, 40, of same place, Ranjana Singh Chhettri, 10, of same place and Kundan Patel, 4, were killed in police firing. Preliminary monitoring shows that the locals who had arrived to attend the bazaar and had nothing to do with the protest were killed in the incident.

According to District Police Office, Rupandehi Chief SP Rajendra Dhakal, police fired tear gas shells after protestors pelted stones from amidst the locals who were in the market at the vehicles as more than five dozen trucks loaded with goods were being escorted away from Lumbini Industrial Corridor. He said that the police was compelled to open fire after situation could not be brought under control even when police opened fire in air.

We call on the protestors not to carry out activities like risking lives of common people and keeping women and children in front line of protests while enjoying their right to hold peaceful protest. Our preliminary conclusion is that the locals who had no concern with the protest have been victimized in this incident. Hence, we urge the government to take action against the culprits by conducting necessary investigation into the incident and make proper arrangements for protection of life and property and freedom of civilians.
