Press Statement
Respect Human Rights!
Our attention has been drawn towards the death of Rajiv Kumar Raut, 28, of Bhardaha VDC-1 and injury of 14 persons when police opened firing at Bhardaha chok in Saptari during the strike called by Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha on August 18. Dev Narayan Bishwas, 43, Surendra Mandal, 40, Gopal Mandal, 20, Satya Narayan Raut, 17, Apak Sah, 12, were among the injured. We express our sincere tribute to the deceased and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Resolution of the Nepal’s long violent conflict through dialogue is an example to the world. Similarly, we call on the stakeholders to resolve the indifferences in constitution making also through dialogue.
We confirm that opening fire despite having other options to take the protest under control was inappropriate. We urge the government to focus on implementing basic principles of human rights; provide treatment to the injured and compensation to the family of the deceased; maintain restraint considering the possible damage in such protests and conduct a fair probe into the incident. Likewise, we call on the agitating side to maintain restraint while making their demands meet.
