Begin Meaningful dialogue to save Dr KC’s life
Dr Govinda KC is in hunger strike for the last 13 days demanding to pass Medical Education Bill as per Mathema Commission’s report along with seven other demands. Prior to this, he already had staged 14 hunger strikes and his supporters accused government of not full filling or addressing his demands as per the contract and agreement made. The health condition of Dr KC is deteriorating day by day as a result of hunger strike. INSEC shows its serious concern over his deteriorating health condition.
For the first time in 2012, July 5, Dr KC staged hunger strike and his one point demand was immediately addressed. After one month from the previous hunger strike, he again staged another hunger strike demanding the appointment of Dean at IOM based on the seniority. He ended hunger strike immediately after his demand reached into an agreement with the government.
After the second hunger strike, his demands are also accumulating at the same time. Dr KC’s demands are sometimes pointed towards judiciary and in some instances towards CIAA chief. His demands related to reformation of medical sector is always maintained permanently on his every strike. Fourteenth hunger strike staged by Dr KC within the period of six years were ended in an agreement with the government. He staged another hunger strike against the decision of Apex Court to re appoint Dr Sashi Sharma as a Dean of IOM in 2018, January 7. It can be expected that the series of hunger strike will end only if the problem between the state mechanism on agreeing KC’s demand but not fulfilling it and KC seeing every one as Mafia who is having different opinion than him is properly identified.
The agreement and hunger strike of Dr KC has limited the formation of Medical Education Commission and mandatory admission of 100 students in the medical college. The cost of medical education has been decreased to 2.3 million from 3.3 million. The progress on institute of Karnali Health and Science and Geta Medical College is on the way along with the allocation of budget to open Teaching hospital in all provinces. But, the way Dr KC is adding up his demands in every of his hunger strike will not improve the medical sector but will invite possible anarchy.
In this context, we would like to draw attention of government and Dr KC that any demand or problem can be solve through the means of dialogue.
