We are Committed Towards Protection of Human Rights: Chief Minister Pokharel

Krishna Chandra Nepali Pokharel, Chief Minister of Gandaki Province has said that the provincial government is committed to the protection of human rights.

In a meeting with team INSEC led by Chairperson Dr. Indira Shrestha, Minister Pokharel said that the government of Gandaki Province would work with human rights organizations to prevent human rights violations and abuses in the province.

He stated that roles differ when one is active in a political party and when one is in a leading position in the government therefore he urged the government to raise its voice if human rights are violated.

Minister Pokharel was visited by team INSEC at his residence. The team consisted of Chairperson Shrestha, Human Rights Documentation and Policy Advocacy Department’s head Shreeram Bajgain, Coordinator of INSEC Gandaki Province Office, Shiva Khakurel, INSEC Gandaki Province’s Program Officer Sabnam Sharma and Madhu Panthi.

INSEC’s Chairperson Dr. Indira Shrestha said that INSEC is ready to cooperate with the provincial government in the protection and promotion of human rights.

He said that the role of civil society along with the government would be important for the protection of the rights of the citizens and for justice.

INSEC Human Rights Documentation and Policy Advocacy Department’s head Shreeram Bajgain emphasized the works that INSEC has been doing. He said that democracy would be strengthened if rights were ensured.

Coordinator of INSEC Gandaki Province Office, Shiva Khakurel said that INSEC and the provincial government needs to cooperate on the issues of human rights.

He requested the Chief Minister to conduct a program to listen to the grievances of the public and to enhance human rights friendly laws and policies.
