We are committed to making Laws for the protection of Human Right Defenders: Lawmakers

Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) had organised a discussion program on Dhulikhel on February 26, 2022, in which the participating legislators expressed their commitment to take initiative to formulate a law to protect the rights of human rights defenders.

They expressed their commitment during a discussion program on the model law on the protection of the rights of human rights defenders.

The program was attended by Krishna Bhakta Pokharel, Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives. He stated that conclusions should be reached after discussing the option of making provisions in the law related to human rights defenders or laws related to the Human Rights Commission for the protection of the rights of human rights defenders.

“We need a clear legal framework in this regard and for that, we are positive. We are with the civil society on this issue,” he further added.

Chairperson of the Legislative Management Committee of the National Assembly Parashuram Meghi Gurung said, ‘only after the issue of the rights of human rights defenders is raised, the issues of human rights of others will be highlighted.’

Member of National Human Rights Commission Dr. Surya Dhungel said that all the stakeholders should play their part for the protection of the rights of human rights defenders.

Chairperson of INSEC Dr. Indira Shrestha said that there was a need for a law to protect the rights of frontline human rights defenders.

The Members of Parliament and human rights activists participating in the program said that such discussions would elucidate the issue and stressed on the need to formulate laws for the protection of the rights of human rights defenders.
