Teacher Arrested for Beating Student in School Premises

Police arrested Sudip Adhikari, an English teacher of Universe English Boarding School, Pokhara Metropolitan City – 32  on June 2 for beating a 9-year-old boy studying in Class 5. The student sustained severe injuries and bruises on his back  when the teacher punished him for having bad handwriting on 26 May..

DSP Basanta Kumar Sharma of District Police Office Kaski stated that the police arrested the teacher on the same day after the student’s parents filed a complaint on June 2 with the initiation of human rights activists who were monitoring the incident.

The monitoring team reached out to DSP Sunil Kumar Malla of the Area Police Office to investigate the incident and urged him to ensure that the teacher involved in the beating faces legal consequences. The team also visited the child’s home to gather information about the incident and the child’s health. Additionally, they met with the school principal, Hari Dhamala, discussed the incident and urged him to create a more child friendly environment in the school.

The monitoring team included, the coordinator of INSEC Gandaki Province Shiva Prasad Khakurel, Bina Silwal, the Executive Director of Kopila Nepal and Coordinator of Civil Society Network for Peace,  Shankar Nepali of CWIN, Kunjani Pariyar Pyasi, the Coordinator of Advocacy Forum and Bamdev Dhungana, the Chairperson of District Child Forum Kaski.

The school administration has already dismissed the teacher involved in the beating. Additionally, it is reported that the parents had previously filed a complaint at the District Police Office, Kaski on the day of the incident and police subsequently called both the parties and discussed the matter.
