Teacher Arrested for Beating a Minor in School Premises

Police arrested 37-year-old Purna Prasad Pokharel, a teacher, for beating a 14-year-old minor of Itahari Sub-metropolitan City-16.

The aggrieved party filed a complaint against the accused at the Area Police Office, Itahari on 30 May alleging that the accused beat the minor for not doing homework on May 29, 2024. DSP Tek Bahadur Karki said that the accused was arrested for investigation based on the complaint.

Similarly, Rajan Budhathoki, the paternal uncle of the victim, said that a girl studying in class 9 was beaten by the teacher at Shikshadeep Boarding School of Itahari Sub-metropolitan City-16.

The victim is currently receiving treatment at Birat Teaching Hospital, Biratnagar for injuries to her hand and various parts of her body. The teacher caused her injuries by hitting her with a plastic pipe. Sahadev Kafle, the principal of the school stated that the teacher has been suspended.

Article 39 of the Constitution of Nepal provides the rights of children as fundamental rights. Sub-article seven of this Article states that no child shall be subjected to physical, mental, or any other form of torture in any setting, including home, school, or any other place and situation. Additionally, the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders (1998) defines teachers as human rights defenders.
