Teacher Allegedly Beats Student on School Premises, Causing Injury

Lakhan Mehta, 45, has alleged that Rajkumar Mehta, a 36-year-old teacher from Devangunj Rural Municipality-6 beat his 13-year-old son Ashish Mehta studying in Grade 7 at Janata Basic School in Rajganj, Devangunj Rural Municipality-6, on November 25. It has been reported that the teacher hit the student on his back with a stick on November 25 for not completing homework and not following discipline. In response, Rajkumar Mehta claimed that while attempting to scare the student by striking the bench with a stick, the student moved and accidentally came into contact with the stick, causing the injury.

The child sustained bruises on his back from the beating and was treated at a local clinic on November 25. In a discussion held on November 26 regarding the incident, the accused teacher apologized, and a settlement was reached, as stated by Lakhan Mehta.

The National Education Policy 2019, and the Act Relating to Children 2018 of Nepal prohibit imposing physical or mental punishment on children. According to the Child Rights Act, 2018 of Nepal, a person who commits violence against a child can be sentenced to up to 3 years of imprisonment, a fine of 30,000 rupees, or both. Likewise, the Constitution of Nepal, 2015, guarantees children’s rights as fundamental rights. Article 39 (7) of the Constitution states: “No child shall be subjected to physical, mental, or any other form of torture in the home, school, or any other place or condition whatsoever.”
