Suspicious Death of a Journalist, Committee formed For Investigation

The dead body of 63-year-old journalist Maniraj Dahal of Diktel Roopakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality-4 was found on May 27, 2022, in a suspicious condition. A six-member investigation committee has been formed under the chairpersonship of the Chief District Officer for investigation.

An investigation committee was formed after Dahal’s body was found in a suspicious condition in the house where Kshitij Multi-Purpose Savings and Credit Cooperative Society is located in Diktel Haatdanda.

On May 28, Chief District Officer Pabitra Prakash Shah told INSEC that a six-member investigation committee was formed under his chairpersonship.

In the presence of the deceased’s son Nabaraj Dahal and daughter Manju Dahal Thapa, a six-member investigation committee has been formed under the coordination of Inspector Shankar Prasad Chaudhary. The members of the committee are Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality’s Mayor Tirtharaj Bhattarai, Deputy Mayor Vision Rai, District Police Office’s DSP Umesh Lamsal, Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi-1 Ward Chairperson Nabaraj Rai, Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi-4 Ward Chairperson Khagendra Rai and Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi-2 Ward Chairperson Dinesh Ghimire.

The investigation committee will investigate the truth and publish the report as soon as possible.

Nabaraj, the son of the deceased, said that the body of Dahal, who was found dead on May 27, was found with injuries on his body, lying on the ground, covered in a quilt, and bleeding from his nose and mouth.

He further adds that the mobile phone used by the father was found on the bed, but the mobile phone was lost while the police were preparing the warrant, and the investigation became more suspicious.

On May 28, the victims and the locals staged a protest rally from the district hospital premises to the district administration office saying that the mobile phone was lost during the raid.

A committee was formed to investigate the incident after protests from the victims and locals.

Deceased Dahal is a founding member of Nepal Journalist Association district branch, former founding member and former chairperson of Nepal Press Union district branch, current chairperson of Kshitij multi-purpose cooperative, former chairperson of Trade Union Congress and regional representative of Nepali Congress.

Post-mortem of the dead body was conducted at the district hospital on May 28 and the victim received the dead body on the same day.

He was cremated at the crematory of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality-4 Khalle in Sasu Khola on May 28 said his son Nabaraj.

The Press Union has demanded to investigate on the incident and take action against the perpetrator.

The 1998 Declaration on Human Rights Defenders defines politicians and journalists as human rights defenders.
