Students of Lalguirans Primary School in Chaikune Rural Municipality-5, Ranagaira, face a shortage of drinking water and proper toilets. The school, with 37 students, is experiencing difficulties due to inadequate water supply and sanitation facilities. Arusi Sijali Magar, a class 5 teacher, expressed her concerns, stating that students have to walk 15 minutes home just to use the toilet. She added that there is no water available in the school, so it must be brought from home. ‘Due to this shortage, the school’s toilet is unusable and in poor condition. we have to walk home for 15 minutes,if we need to use the toilet,’ she said.
Tulbahadar Thapa, the principal of the school, stated that the main reason for the lack of proper toilets in the school is the shortage of water. He explained that citizens have to fetch drinking water from an hour away, and at times, there is no drinking water available. As a result, students are forced to go home to access both drinking water and toilet facilities. He mentioned that students are forced to study under old, dilapidated tin roofs because the four-roomed building, constructed by Chaikune Rural Municipality and the provincial government, remains incomplete. According to Principal Thapa, both the local community and the students have been dealing with a prolonged shortage of drinking water.
Khadak Sunakhari, a 37-year-old parent from Chaikune Rural Municipality-5, Ranagaira, expressed concern that children are being deprived of their right to health and access to drinking water. He stated that the authorities have failed to address the water shortage in schools.
Tapendra BC, a ward member of Chaikune Rural Municipality-5, stated that the rural municipality has repeatedly shown no interest in addressing the issue. Khadak BK, Chairperson of Chaikune Rural Municipality, acknowledged the problem but explained that it has persisted due to the lack of a suitable water source. He added that efforts are now being made to manage the water source and resolve the issue. The shortage of drinking water and toilets is not only affecting Ranagaira but also in schools in Dharapani, Puchma, and Rekcha in Chaikune Rural Municipality-5.
