Students Affected as Hydropower Project Faces Obstruction
When the Dillichaur Hydropower Project in Patari Rural Municipality-4, located in the eastern part of the district, faced obstruction, students were affected. Subsequently, a damaged pipeline caused the canal in the same ward to become unusable, leaving locals without electricity. Binita Budhathoki, a student studying at Ran Moksha Secondary School, expressed concerns about the three-day power outage, impacting daily routines such as returning home, studying in the evening, and completing household chores for herself and approximately eight hundred others in the area. According to Krishna Bahadur Budha, chairperson of the Dillichaur Hydropower Cooperative, the canal was damaged when the obstruction occurred in April. Since then, the municipality has been making efforts to repair the canal. If the repair work at the site of the obstruction is not completed on time, the canal, which is 25 meters long, will remain obstructed. The power supply has been completely interrupted since April 6, 2024. The technical estimate for repairing the damaged canal requires a budget of six lakh rupees. Although the municipality has initiated cooperation with the local government for the repair, there has been no hearing yet. Chairperson Budhathoki emphasized that around 800 households in Wards 4, 5, and 6 of the municipality have been affected by the complete interruption of electricity due to the repair of the obstructed canal. He mentioned that only 38 kilowatts of electricity is consumed from the 58 kilowatts produced by the Dillichaur Hydropower Project and plans to sell electricity to the National Nepal Electricity Authority. After the municipality manages the budget for repairs, it will take two to three weeks to rebuild the damaged canal, during which electricity will remain disrupted.
