Signature Campaign against Chhaupadi Practice
District Administration Office Surkhet initiated a signature campaign in their premises from 30 December against the evil practice of Chhaupadi and to eradicate menstrual huts.
‘We are against this brutal practice, this is a social evil and promoting it is a crime’- this was written in the signature board. CDO Basanta Adhikari said the campaign is targeting the signatures of the citizens, various organizations and employees.
Chhaupadi is exercised in many districts of Karnali Province including its capital Surkhet because of which this awareness campaign is launched, informed CDO Adhikari. He added that the beneficiaries were given services only after they had committed to stand against this practice.
According to National Criminal Procedure Code’s Article 168 every Chhaupadi practitioner or promoter will either be charged three thousand rupees or will be imprisoned for three months or both.
