Sentenced to Nine Years Imprisonment for Rape

A 39-year-old Santosh Rai from Dhankuta, Sahidbhumi Municipality-5, has been sentenced to nine years of imprisonment by the District Court for the crime of rape of a 23-year-old woman.

As per the communication of Parasmani Pokharel, registrar of the court, to INSEC’s representative, District Court Judge Pramesh Pokharel, in the session held on July 14, 2023, declared the accused guilty and ordered imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 3,00,000 and an additional compensation of Rs. 3,00,000.

The victim filed a complaint against the accused at the District Police Office, Dhankuta on July 9, 2022, alleging that the accused had raped her on the July 8, 2022.

The victim stated that the accused had allegedly confined her in a hotel located in Basantapur, Laligurans Municipality-2, Tehrathum, under the pretext of going for a sightseeing trip on July 8, 2022.

On the basis of the victim’s statement, the accused was arrested by the police  July 9, 2022 from Dhankuta Bazaar and, the case was registered under the charge of rape in the District Court on August 3.

After the arrest of the accused based on the victim’s statement, as the incident took place in Tehrathum, the case was registered at Tehrathum District Court.

As per the order of District Court Judge, Mahendra Prasad Pokhrel, the accused was kept in custody on August 3, 2022 for further enquiry.

The victim underwent a medical examination on July 8, 2022 at the district hospital.
