Thame Basic School, located in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, Thame, has been closed for three months, disrupting teaching and learning. The school was closed after a flood on August 16, 2024, which completely damaged its physical infrastructure.
Prakanda Neupane, Education Officer of the Education Development and Coordination Unit in Solukhumbu, stated that the flood, caused by two avalanches in the upper Thame area, destroyed both the school building and the dormitory, leading to the suspension of educational activities.
According to Neupane, the school had to be closed due to damage caused by the flood and inundation to teaching materials, educational documents, supplies, drawers, electronic equipment, computers, and other items.
Since Thame Basic School cannot be rebuilt immediately, students have been transferred to Khumjung Secondary School in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5 to continue their education, as informed by Education Officer Neupane.
Thame Basic School, which provided education up to Grade 7, had 50 students enrolled, according to the school. The spokesperson for the rural municipality, Lakpachiri Sherpa, mentioned that preparations are underway to transport the students’ educational materials from Phaplu by helicopter and distribute them.

Although efforts were made earlier to transfer the students to Khumjung Secondary School, the transfer could not be completed due to various reasons, the rural municipality stated.
