Road Blocked for Three Weeks After Flood Washes Away Bridges in Taplejung

Roads in Taplejung have been blocked for weeks following the collapse of bridges due to floods and landslides, severely impacting transportation and causing difficulties for patients needing ambulance services. The landslide and flood in Taplejung have recently destroyed five temporary bridges, including one over the Tamor River, disrupting transport in Phaktanglung Rural Municipality for three weeks. This loss has significantly affected transportation, especially for patients requiring urgent medical care.

The monsoon that started in Koshi on June 11 has affected the district since June 13. Wooden bridges at multiple locations, such as Chiruwa and Tapethok, Sisawa and Sisne rivers of the Tamor River, have been washed away exacerbating the situation in Phaktanglung Rural Municipality.

Rajan Limbu, Chairperson of the Rural Municipality, highlighted the dire consequences of these events and noted about the shortages of food, medicine, and essential supplies due to disrupted transportation services. Chairperson Limbu added that patients are suffering as the ambulances and other transportion services were disrupted from the first week of June, following flooding and landslides in certain areas of the road.

Chairman Limbu stated that despite informing the concerned authorities about the issues regarding the construction of the bridge and the removal of the road buried by landslides, the responsible authorities have not taken any action. Additionally, the Rural Municipality continues to suffer, with shortage of food, and because the ambulances could not operate for medical emergencies.

Furthermore, the residents of Phaktanglung have also been deprived of communication services due to the interruption of telephone services.
