Rise in Unsafe Abortion in Jumla

  June 29, 2024 By: INSEC

The number of unsafe abortions in Jumla has been increasing. There has been a rise in the number of women taking contraceptive pills and undergoing unsafe abortions without medical check-ups.

Despite the legal provision for safe abortions up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, statistics show that medications are being used unsafely for abortions. However, Krishna Sapkota, Chief of the Public Health Office, stated that there is no precise data indicating that unsafe abortions are increasing in the district. He said that 19 women in 2022/2023 and 21 women until mid-June 2024 have sought treatment at the Karnali Institute of Health Sciences due to heavy bleeding and other medical complications after taking abortion pills.

Recently, there’s a growing need to raise awareness and implement regulations to protect women and teenagers from the rising risks of unsafe abortions.

Likewise, Gaurinanda Archaya, Chief of the District Coordination Committee, emphasized the need for all relevant bodies to come together to reduce the use of abortion pills and unsafe abortions. Additionally, he mentioned that it is crucial to spread public awareness about the health effects of unsafe abortions.

Similarly, Chief District Officer Jaya Kumar Ghimire emphasized the importance of the cooperation of everyone to ensure effective safe abortion services. He also stressed the need to conduct widespread awareness campaigns in various areas about the consequences of unsafe abortions.
