  August 3, 2023 By: INSEC

INSEC District Representative, Manoharkumar Pokharel was assaulted by a police officer in the premises of the District Police Office, Rajbiraj Municipality-6, on July 31. In light of this incident, Siraha officials issued a press release on August 1, demanding legal action against the culprit.

A joint press release has been issued by the following organizations in Siraha: INSEC Siraha, Human Rights Defender Network Siraha, Women Human Rights Defender Network Siraha, Women Rehabilitation Center (WOREC) Siraha, Comprehensive Community Development Center Siraha, Amnesty Nepal Siraha, Mukti Nepal Golbazar, Dalit Jan Kalyan Youth Club Lahan, Nepal National Dalit Social Welfare Organization Siraha, and Jeevan Jyoti Society Siraha.

The continuous occurrence of such incidents on human rights defenders, dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights, raises questions on the state of democracy. The protection and promotion of human rights are the responsibility of the state. Therefore, to create an environment where human rights defenders are safe and can raise their voices against human rights violations, a new revolution for the right is essential. Otherwise, humanity, human rights, social justice, rule of law, and democracy cannot be established.

It is the government’s responsibility to create an environment that recognizes, acknowledges, and respects the work of human rights defenders. Therefore, we demand swift legal action and the arrest of those involved in violent activities to control such actions and prevent future violations of human rights. If the situation persists, human rights activists will have no choice but to resort to street protests to safeguard and advocate for human rights.
