Police Arrest Accused of Social Media Harassment
The police have apprehended 42-year-old Chaturman Mahato, a resident of Ratnanagar Municipality-10, Chitwan, on charges of harassing a 28-year-old woman through social media. The arrest followed a complaint filed by the victim on December 5 at the Cyber Bureau of Police Headquarters, Bhotahiti.
The victim alleged that the accused engaged in character assassination by misusing her photos from Facebook, Messenger, and other social networks. Furthermore, the accused created a video and forwarded it to the victim’s husband. SP Pashupati Kumar Rai of Bhotahiti, Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police, stated that the arrest of Mr. Mahato occurred on December 7 in response to the victim’s complaint.
SP Rai further informed that the Cyber Bureau secured an extension of seven days from the district court in Kathmandu, allowing the detention of the accused for the same period. This legal action underscores the commitment of law enforcement to address cases of online abuse and harassment, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding individuals from digital misconduct.
