A patient passed away when the police intercepted an ambulance and detained both the patient and her family. The ambulance was transporting 56-year-old Chirmaya Lo, who was suffering from heart disease from Bakaiya Rural Municipality-1, along with her family, on their way back home from Kathmandu on October 1.

The patient had been discharged from the Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center, located within the Maharajganj campus of the Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu. It is alleged that the woman passed away following a dispute with Assistant Constable of Police Dilli Ram Siwakoti when he stopped the ambulance No. 8432  in front of Rani Durbar, in Hetauda sub-metropolitan city-4.

A Tata Sumo carrying the patient’s family was traveling alongside the ambulance, and another vehicle was coming from Bakaiya to transport the family.Lal Bahadur Waiwa, the patient’s son, reported that as the patient’s family was in the process of transferring to another vehicle on the main road in front of Rani Durbar, Assistant Police Constable Dilliram Siwakoti, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, physically assaulted both the driver and the patient’s relatives.

Five people, including the deceased woman’s son and son-in-law, were detained for four/five hours and released on October 2. DSP Lakshmi Bhandari of the District Police Office disclosed that, upon recognizing the mistake made by the police in the incident, the individuals were released from custody after providing a written statement of consent.

Waiba, the son of the patient, stated that the letter of agreement specifies that the police side is responsible for providing medical treatment to the injured Assistant Constable Siwakoti. DSP Bhandari indicated that once Siwakoti’s treatment is completed, a formal agreement will be negotiated between the two parties
