Pashupati Chaulagai Memorial Regional Hospital in Charikot has closed its specialist surgery service.

Surgery services have been stopped from July 17, 2022, in the 50-bedded  hospital located in Charikot, the district headquarters.

Shanti Prasad Neupane, the Information Officer of the hospital, said that the surgery service was stopped after the contract period of the surgeon was not extended.

The surgery service was stopped after the hospital could not afford the expense of hiring a surgeon. The doctor was hired through a consultancy and the hospital did not renew the contract saying that it could not afford further expenses.

The hospital has informed that all operations related to gynaecology and obstetrics, hernia, appendicitis and other surgeries operated under the maternal and infant program without any cost, have been shut.

The hospital has 72 employees and it has been providing all services free of charge.

Ministry of Health under Bagmati Province has sent a letter to 63 employees working in the hospital not to renew their contractual service for the financial year 022/023.

The hospital also provides food to the patients without any charges. However, the hospital said that after the financial crisis, these services will also be closed at some point.

Every day around 200 to 300 patients visit the hospital for treatment. The beneficiaries of the district are now compelled to go to either Dhulikhel or Kathmandu for health services.
