Palpa Hospital Facing Difficulties In Delivering Services Due to Lack of Qualified Doctors

Palpa Hospital is facing challenges in service delivery due to a shortage of doctors. The hospital, which receives a high volume of patients daily, has nine specialist doctor positions, but none are currently filled. For the past three years, the facility has operated without any specialist doctors, relying solely on these vacant positions. Four years ago, this hospital received temporary approval from the Lumbini Provincial Government to operate as a 50-bed facility, but it currently has only 25 beds. The number of patients admitted and those visiting the OPD is steadily increasing. However, despite the growing patient crowd, there are no doctors available to provide care.

There are eight MBBS doctors in the hospital, but only three are permanent. Gurans Atreya, Chairperson of the Hospital Development Committee, said that the hospital has been providing services by adding three scholarship doctors and two internal doctors. “There has been a problem in smooth service delivery due to the high number of patients and low human resources. We are trying to bring in more human resources,” he said. Up to 500 patients visit this hospital daily. Due to a lack of proper human resources in the hospital, patients have to wait for treatment all day long. Bhagwan Bhandari, the Coordinator of the Human Rights Defenders Network Palpa, stated that despite the increase in the number of patients at the hospital, proper human resource management cannot be implemented. He mentioned that the hospital currently provides services such as OPD, emergency care, internal medicine, laboratory tests, eye treatment, dental services, pharmacy, maternal care, family planning, and post-mortem services.
