Overcrowding in Doti Jail Created Problems for Prisoners

  August 14, 2024 By: INSEC

The prisoners in the Doti district jail are facing challenges due to overcrowding, with the number of inmates being double the facility’s capacity. As a result, they have been deprived of basic facilities and rights. The district jail which has a capacity for 30 inmates including five women, is currently holding 69 prisoners, including two women.

The inmates have complained that this overcrowding has created significant difficulties with sleeping, eating, and using the toilet. Jailer Sarita Chanda mentioned that the building housing male prisoners in the district jail is in poor condition, creating security risks. Due to overcrowding, the inmates have to live in congested spaces. She added that the overcrowding has led to prisoners suffering from skin diseases and that there is a lack of sports equipment and a library for them.

Gopal Prasad Aryal, Chief District Officer of the District Administration Office, Doti, stated that relevant agencies have been informed about the need for prison reforms, and initiatives are underway to address the issue.
