Over Crowded Prison in Mid-western region

The prisons in mid-western region have prisoners and detainees three times more than its capacity which is causing difficulties for the prisoners to live in. As per data provided by the regional police office of Surkhet, in this region 15 prisons have a capacity to accommodate 820 prisoners and detainees however there are 2500.

Jailer lal Bahadur Khatri of Surkhet prison said that 25-30 detainees are compelled to sleep in one room. This has also caused them a problem in sleeping, eating and going to toilet.

According to data, in Banke prison there are 609 prisoners and detainees however it can only accommodate 609. Similarly, Bardiya prison has capacity to accommodate 100 however there are 248. In Dang prison 213 prisoners and detainees are kept in a prison which has a capacity of 50. In other districts like Kalikot, Pyuthan, Rolpa has a same problem of over capacity.

Similarly, 43 prisoners and detainees are kept in Jajarkot prison having a capacity of 25. In Humla 72 are kept which have capacity of 25. In Dolpa, Jumla, Rukum Dailekh are having a same problem. In mid-western region Dailkeh prison has 10 times more prisoners than its capacity where as in Dolpa there are fewer prisoners.

DIG Madhav Nepal of regional police office of Surkhet said that it is very important that government need to build capacity of prisons and provide resources to the police administration.

In mid-region, Mugu district do not have any prison according to regional police office.
