The operation of the school has been Disrupted at Janakalyan Basic School in Chaukune Municipality-5 Due to a Lack of Toilets and Classrooms. The absence of toilets and classrooms at Janakalyan Basic School in Rekchha, Chaukune Municipality-5, has disrupted educational activities. With no toilets available at the school, students are forced to go home to use the restroom. The school also lacks drinking water, making the toilet facilities unusable, according to the school’s principal, Lokraj Devkotal. He stated that there is no drinking water for students, let alone toilets. Students have to bring drinking water from home, and they also need to go home to use the toilet.

Likewise, the situation of toilets at schools in the provincial capital, Surkhet, is similarly problematic. Kusal Upadhyaya, a 9th-grade student at the Tripureshwor Secondary School in Dhodekhali, explained that the school’s toilets are neither child-friendly nor environmentally friendly, causing significant issues. There are not enough toilets and students can’t go to the toilet whenever needed, and it gets crowded. The odor makes it worse. As a result, many students are forced to avoid using the toilet.  Roshni Gurung from Krishna Sanskrit and General Secondary School expressed her concerns about the lack of adolescent-friendly toilets at her school. She added that the ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ toilets are located too close to each other, which feels uncomfortable. It’s difficult to change sanitary pads during menstruation, and the toilets are far away. Ganesh Khadka, a 10th-grade student at Prabhat Secondary School, Kol Danda, mentioned that the lack of soap and water in the toilet has created additional problems. He explained that there is insufficient water in the toilet, and plastic waste further complicates the situation. He also pointed out that while the school teaches students to wash their hands with soap and water after using the toilet, there is no soap available in the school. He emphasized that the absence of proper toilets and a child-friendly environment has led to difficulties in learning.

The Assistant Principal of Krishna Sanskrit and General Secondary School, Itram, Dilliram Chapagain, stated that despite various challenges, managing the toilet facilities has been difficult. He explained that the school has a high number of students and insufficient infrastructure, which has led to problems. He also mentioned that efforts are being made to coordinate with various bodies regarding the management of the toilets. He noted that the issue has arisen because students have not been following the rules set by the school.

The Chief of the Education Section of Birendranagar Municipality, Dhirendraprasad Sharma, stated that necessary efforts are being made to address such issues. He explained that proper toilet facilities are essential in schools, but due to limited resources and facilities, it has not been possible to organize them. He mentioned that the issue has been brought to the attention of the municipal executive and assured that the problem will be resolved soon.

The lack of toilet facilities in schools in Karnali Province has impacted the education of students. This issue is particularly prevalent in schools in rural areas, leading to health risks and a decline in the quality of education. Therefore, achieving educational development goals in Karnali schools will be difficult unless basic infrastructure is ensured. Both long-term strategies and immediate efforts are required to address this issue.
