Mistreatment Upon Teacher in Taplejung
Khemnath Ghimire, a 37-year-old teacher at Janata Basic School in Pathibhara Yangbarak Rural Municipality-6 Thumbedin, was mistreated on August 20. Ghimire was beaten by Ramesh Bhandari, his wife Menuka Bhandari, and others from the same Rural Municipality while on his way to school.
After the attack on Ghimire, the teachers’ associations issued statements protesting against the incident. The Nepal Teachers’ Association, Nepal National Teachers’ Association, and the Pathibhara Yangbarak Rural Municipality Committee of the Unified All Nepal Teachers’ Association have each released separate statements demanding that those responsible for the incident should be brought into legal process. Furthermore, the police reported that an investigation has been started into the incident and the reason behind the mistreatment has not been revealed yet.
The Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, 1998 defines teachers as human rights defenders.
