Lamjung Hospital Faces Vandalism After The Demise of Mother and Newborn

The relatives of the deceased, 26-year-old Shobha BK and her baby from Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-9, expressed their outrage by vandalizing and demonstrating at the hospital, attributing the demise to the hospital’s alleged negligence on November 30.During the demonstration, the relatives of the deceased shouted slogans, pelted stones, burned tires at the hospital gate along with demanding action against the doctors involved in the treatment. The police said that the necessary security personnel were mobilized in the hospital premises as the hospital became tense after the protest increased.

The deceased was admitted to Lamjung Hospital on November 27, and the baby was born lifeless during a surgical procedure conducted on the afternoon of November 28. Subsequently, as the mother continued to experience uncontrolled bleeding, she was referred to Chitwan Medical College on November 28. However, she lost her life in the evening of the same day during the treatment.

Relatives of the deceased started protesting on the same issue on Wednesday, alleging that the incident happened due to the negligence of the hospital, and started vandalizing the hospital on Thursday.

A 6-member investigation and study committee has been formed under the coordination of Khim Bahadur Khadka, Director General of Gandaki Province Health Directorate, to investigate the incident. According to the District Administration Office Lamjung, the committee has been ordered to find out the truth about the incident and submit a report with suggestions to the Ministry of Social Development and Health within seven days.
