Lack of Toilets in School: Girls Face Challenges Due to Absence of Sanitary Pad-Friendly Facilities

Kailash Secondary School in Dadaphaya, Simkot Rural Municipality-7, lacks toilets, causing problems for both students and teachers. Bisna Sunar, a class-10 student of the same school complained that the lack of sanitary pad-friendly toilets at the school creates difficulties for girls. She mentioned that during menstruation, it becomes challenging for them to come to school. According to her, the absence of these facilities not only leads to an unhygienic environment but also negatively impacts the students.

Most schools in Humla District face this problem. However, although the school located in the ward connected to the headquarters in Simkot should not have these issues, its condition is similar to that of other schools. According to Principal Mej Bahadur Budha, the school has three old toilets, but their poor quality has caused difficulties for both teachers and students. He stated that the school, which has over 300 students and 18 teachers, cannot effectively utilize the old toilets. The school has 180 female students and five female teachers. Principal Budha said they face significant difficulties because of the lack of proper toilets. He noted that while Humla is geographically disadvantaged, the students in the ward also struggle to access toilet facilities, adding to their problems.

Principal Budha complained that they cannot build new toilets for the school due to insufficient resources, forcing them to continue using the old facilities. He mentioned that he has reached out to various government and non-government organizations for the construction of sanitary pad-friendly toilets, but so far, nothing has been arranged. He added that the lack of proper toilet facilities sometimes forces students to use the open space.
