Lack of Medicines In Ward-Level Hampers Right to Health of Citizens

The patients seeking treatment at the health post in Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-6, Thumpakhar, have been adversely affected due to the unavailability of free medicines. The shortage of medicines in rural health institutions has amplified the difficulties for local residents, especially in the midst of a viral fever outbreak in the village.

Rekha Thapa, the coordinator of a human rights monitoring group based in Thumpakhar, highlighted the problem. Despite health workers being present at the health institutions, the lack of medicine is causing significant issues for patients. Consequently, patients are compelled to purchase medicine from the local medical center due to the scarcity of essential drugs.

Anup Adhikari, the District Public Health Chief, explained that the responsibility for managing medicines in health posts falls on the local government. Consequently, medicines couldn’t be supplied from the district. Ward Chairperson Chakra Basnet of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-6 mentioned that the medicine supply is expected to improve within a few weeks.

The Constitution of Nepal guarantees every citizen the right to access basic health services free of charge. Despite this, patients continue to face difficulties when essential medicines are unavailable at health posts in Thumpakhar.
