The lack of health workers has posed problems to inmates of the District jail, Gorkha. Although there is an assigned position for an Assistant Health Worker, no one has been appointed to the post.

The management has been able to fill the empty post ever since the previous health worker Dr. Motilal Bishwakarma transferred to Kathmandu on July 28.

According to the security guard of the district jail, Ramesh Bayalkoti, the prisoners are transported to Gorkha Hospital even for minor treatments.

He said that it was easier for them to examine their general health when there were health workers in the prison. Inmates residing in the jail have a range of non-serious to serious health conditions.

Bayalkoti said that there are 89 male inmates, 9 female inmates, and 7 senior citizen inmates. A health worker, within the jail premises, would make health checkups accessible to the senior citizens. He also mentioned that sometimes more than two people fall sick at the same time and they have to take turns to go to the hospital. That means sometimes the prison administration has to conduct more than one hospital trip on a single day.

Ganesh Bhattarai, the jailer of Gorkha jail, also shared the problems inmates face in the absence of health workers. He confirmed that they have repeatedly requested for designated health worker. The province government has decided to send health worker will be sent after being selected through the public service commission.
