Lack of Blood Bank in Hospital Created Problems for Pregnant Women Seeking Delivery Services
Pregnant women seeking delivery services in Chautara Hospital are facing challenges as there is no blood bank in the district. The district lacks a blood bank to collect and safely store the required blood, leading to challenges in providing blood for women who need it during surgeries for childbirth. At the 50-bed district hospital in the headquarters, Chautara, the only option for obtaining blood is relying on donors. Medical Superintendent Dr. Rudramani Bhandari of Chautara Hospital stated that during emergencies, they have to contact individuals with the required blood group and request them to donate blood to the patient.
Rupwati Tamang,23, of Indrawati Rural Municipality-1 Simpalkavre had come to Chautara Hospital due to labor pains. The doctor told his relatives to search for blood because she lacked blood. The patient’s relatives joined in the search for blood. However, did not find it anywhere. Later, a teacher from Chautara Sangachowkgadi-7 gave her blood and her operation was successful.
Similarly, 27-year-old Parvati Nepali from Chautara Sangachowkgadhi Municipality-1 was in severe labor pain at Chautara Hospital. Her relatives searched everywhere for blood but couldn’t find any. Eventually, after a request from the hospital’s doctors, a soldier from the Nepal Army donated blood, saving Parvati’s life, according to Dr. Amardeep Shah of the hospital.
Many patients seeking treatment at the hospital face situations where public announcements have to be made due to a lack of blood. The absence of a blood bank in the district has caused significant difficulties for patients and their families. Despite repeated meetings and discussions among stakeholders regarding the establishment of a blood bank at Chautara Hospital, the initiative has not been implemented. Dr. Rudramani Bhandari, Medical Superintendent of the District Hospital, Chautara stated that patients coming for treatment face additional stress when they require blood, as their families must endure this challenge as well. He emphasized that establishing a blood bank is the only solution to end this issue and urged the Nepal Red Cross and other stakeholders to take an interest in setting up the facility.
