Lack of Ambulance Led Birth in Tractor

A woman in Bijaynagar rural municipality gave birth in a tractor due to scarcity of ambulance. This rural municipality doesn’t have ambulances which compels the women to deliver at home or streets.

Bijaynagar rural municipality-5 Katuwa’s Urmila Kori faced labor and was rushed by her family members to Chandrauta in their tractor- Lu 3 Ta 2448 since they couldn’t find ambulances or any other vehicles.

She gave birth after crossing 15kms in the tractor. Her mother-in-law Kamalawati emphasized on the problem of not getting ambulance for Urmila’s delivery. The baby was born in extreme cold wave so both her mother and baby had trouble, she added.

As their rural municipality did not have good health organization, they had to take her to Shivaraj Municipality. Till date there are no ambulances placed in Bijaynagar rural municipality.

Gopal Bahadur Thapa, Chairperson of the rural municipality says due to unfavorable situations they aren’t able to buy ambulance. He said this year they will be buying an ambulance for the rural municipality.

According to the District Health Office still 53% of the accouchement happens at home. There are 27 accouchement centers in the district.
