Journalist Sustained Injuries by Police Baton Charge

Journalist Kapleshwor Yadav of Bariyarpatti Rural Municipality-2, Siraha, currently residing at Biratnagar Metropolitan City-6 has reported that he sustained injuries from police baton charge on May 24 at Koshi Hospital in Biratnagar while gathering news on a patient’s demise allegedly due to hospital negligence. He further mentioned that the incident occurred while he was covering the news about the deceased’s relatives’ protesting at the District Administration Office, Morang. Currently, he is receiving treatment at a Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar.

Similarly, Sonukumar Das, 35 of Biratnagar Metropolitan City-6, an editor at Live News Raftar also reported about being abused by Dr. Farwad Silwal, the Chairperson of the Hospital Development Committee, during the same incident. Das alleged that Dr. Silwal abused him during his visit to Koshi Hospital on May 24 to cover the same news. However, Dr. Silwal has denied any accusations of misconduct towards the journalist.

The Federation of Nepali Journalists, Morang, has subsequently issued a press release on 25 May to protest against the beating and mistreatment towards the journalists. Netra P. Adhikari, the Branch Secretary of the Federation, has urged the local administration to ensure a safe and free environment for journalism in the issued press release.

The 1998 Declaration on Human Rights Defenders defines doctors and journalists as human rights defenders.
