Journalist Beaten for Making News on Election Updates

Ramesh Banjara (Indra), the publisher of Bagmati Express weekly, and Ramkumar Rijal (Elon), the columnist of the same newspaper, were beaten up on the night of December 4.

Journalists were beaten up by a group of Nepali Congress activists at Palpasa Hotel on Palpasa Road in Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City-2 regarding the issue of news publication.

General Secretary of Bagmati Province, Krishna Saru Magar, said that the journalist was beaten up after the controversy over the news published in the Bagmati Express weekly newspaper about the ambushes within the Nepali Congress during the elections.

While informing about the incident, Magar said that the Congress workers including Bhetwal attacked the journalists and even when they tried to separate them, they continued to beat them.

He said that a group of Nepali Congress workers including Rajesh Bhetwal, Raju Nagarkoti, Ranjana Baniya attacked them. Rijal’s right ear and left cheek were injured in the attack, while Banjara was also injured.

A case has been registered against the accused in District Police Office Makwanpur on December 5 under the attempt of killing Congress workers including Bhetwal who attacked them.

SP Bamdev Gautam said that the accused are absconding after the incident and the search is on for the accused.

In protest against the attacks on journalists, the Central Committee of Nepal Journalist Association, District Committee, Press Chautari Makwanpur, Press Centre and other organizations affiliated with journalists have issued a statement.

Organizations associated with journalists have demanded that perpetrator should be immediately arrested and legal action taken.
