The inmates of Baitadi District Jail are suffering due to overcrowding. Dev Bahadur Pun, a guard at the district jail, lamented that prisoners were compelled to wait in the queue to go to the toilet as the number of inmates in the jail is very high.

He said, “We have to live in tents due to the lack of room. Prisoners are compelled to share the bed. The inmates have to suffer more during winter and summer. ‘

Jailer of the prison, Anil Tiwari said that the district jail has the capacity of 25 inmates including 10 women but currently there are 77 inmates.

Forty-six inmates in the district jail are serving their sentence period and 31 others have been remanded in custody for trial.

Tiwari further added that the prison was established in 2040 BS and now it is in a dilapidated condition. In addition to this, the number of inmates is way beyond the capacity because of which tents have been managed in the premises of the prison for the inmates to live in.

Rajendra Dev Pandey, Chief District Officer of Baitadi said that the Prison Management Department and the provincial government were urged to provide assistance for the management of the prison but they could not solve the problem immediately due to lack of assistance.

Pandey added that due to security reasons they were compelled to send women inmates to the prisons of Dadeldhura and Dhangadhi.
