Inmates and detainees facing difficulties due to overcrowd

The management of the prison is facing severe difficulties after the increasing numbers of inmates and detainees in the district prison of Mahottari. The prison is overcrowded by 261inmates and detainees. The prison has capacity to accommodate only 135 inmates and detainees.

After the beginning of rainy season, inmates are facing difficulties of leaking roof, sleeping problem, toilet and many others. There is a problem of proper water drainage. At the same time there is also a problem for treatment of prisoners according to the management.

Inmate Ramdular Yadav said that they are compelled to wakeup whole night due to the fear of snakes as there is a terror of snake in this season.

The prison is 154 years old and it has not been renovated since long time because of which inmates and detainees are compelled to sleep underneath the tent according to female inmate Devi Shah.

Inmate Bijaya Pandey complained that the allowance provided to the inmates is not enough.

The prison administration said that inmates are facing difficulties on going to the toilet as there are not enough toilets.

The administration said that central prison management department has been informed about the difficulties however; no action has been taken yet according to jailer Sobhendra Thakur. According to the prison management inmates and detainees are facing various ailments such as fever and skin disease.
