Inmate Commits Suicide in Rolpa District Prison

Bijay Bikram Shah, 27, of Ghodaankhe in Barahatal Rural Municipality-1 of Surkhet district has committed suicide by hanging himself on May 19. He was serving a jail term for a case of a criminal offence.

According to the Inspector Thaman GC of the District Police Office, while counting the total number of inmates, it was found that Shah was missing and when searched he was found hanging inside the toilet. Inspector GC further added that the toilet door was locked from inside and Shah was called initially but since he did not respond, a team including Nepal Army broke the door and entered. It was found that Shah had hanged himself with his muffler.

Jailer Yamalal Oli said that Shah was transferred from Banke Jail on November 25, 2021 to complete his jail term.

The Banke District Court had sentenced Shah to five years imprisonment and had also charged him NPR. 50,000 as fine.

A team led by DSP Binod Ghimire of the District Police Office and Major Mani Thapa of the Batuk Dal battalion of the Nepal Army monitored the crime scene and is conducting an investigation, informed Inspector GC.

The prison has a capacity of holding 50 inmates and currently has 117 inmates. There have been problems in the management due to overcrowding.

The dead body of the victim has been taken to the District Hospital of Reghuwa on May 19 for post-mortem, informed jailer Oli.
